Special Schools

A special school is a school catering to the educational needs of children with varying degrees of learning difficulties such as physical disabilities (for example visually or hearing impaired) or with intellectual or behavioural problems such as ASD. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art. There are now many institutions available for these special children. Details for some organizations engaged in providing support to special children are given below. Whithin the school directory details of more than a 1000 special schools are available.  

These schools are specially designed and staffed; and have resources to provide appropriate special education for children.

AYJNIHH

Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH) was established on 9th August 1983. It is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, New Delhi. The Institute is located at Bandra (West), Mumbai – 400 050. Regional Centres of the Institute have been established at Kolkata (1984), New Delhi (1986), Secundarabad (1986) and Bhubaneshwar (1986- in association with Government of Orissa). National Institute for the Visually Handicapped

The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped is a premier Institute in the field of visual disability working under the administrative control of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The Institute is committed to promote rights and dignity of persons with visual impairments. In order to achieve this laudable objective, the Institute produces trained manpower for providing quality education, vocational training and rehabilitation services to the visually impaired persons. National Institute of Mentally Handicapped (NIMH)

National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped established in the year 1984 at Manovikasnagar, Secunderabad (AP) is an Autonomous Body under the administrative control of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India. National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped empowers the persons with mental retardation to access the state of the art rehabilitation intervention viz., educational, therapeutic, vocational, employment, leisure and social activities, sports, cultural programmes and full participation.
